Mihintale is a sacred mountain peak in Sri Lanka, revered as the birthplace of Buddhism on the island. In 247 BC, the Indian Buddhist monk Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa here, marking the historical conversion of the Sinhalese civilization to Buddhism. According to ancient lore, the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka sent his son, the monk Mahinda Thera, to introduce the teachings of the Buddha to Sri Lanka. Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa on the summit of the mountain and tested the king's wisdom with a series of philosophical riddles. Passing the test, the king embraced Buddhism along with his court, fundamentally transforming Sri Lankan culture, architecture, and society.

BY Air : Mihintale, the sacred birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, is located 16 kilometers east of Anuradhapura. To travel by air, book a flight to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo. From there, you can take a domestic flight (e.g., via Cinnamon Air) to Sigiriya or Anuradhapura, or hire a 4-hour taxi to Mihintale. The Department approves the purpose of entry to Sri Lanka. The applicant holds a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of first arrival in Sri Lanka. The Department is satisfied that the applicant has sufficient funds for their stay in Sri Lanka, and for their return passage to their country of origin.
