Petra is a historic and archaeological city in southern Jordan, famously known as the "Rose City" due to its striking pink sandstone cliffs. Established as the capital of the Nabataeans around the 6th century BC, it thrived as a major trading hub before being largely abandoned and rediscovered in 1812.Also known in antiquity as Raqmu, Petra was originally a nomadic Arab settlement that prospered by controlling lucrative caravan routes. Its location at a crossroads between Arabia, Egypt, and Syria-Phoenicia made it a wealthy center for the incense, silk, and spice trades. The Romans annexed the Nabataean kingdom in AD 106, after which the city continued to grow until shifting trade routes and earthquakes led to its gradual abandonment around the 8th century
