Originally, the site was built as temporary housing for Nationalist soldiers and their families after the Chinese Civil War. Decades later, as developers eyed the land, the settlement was slated for demolition. To preserve his community, "Rainbow Grandpa" Huang Yung-Fu—who had no formal art training—began painting the walls with vibrant, childlike characters.
